Ephesians 6:17b – The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
In all of the armor of God, we are provided with but one weapon of offense: the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, the Bible.
The sword, the Bible, is the inherent word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is God’s special and unique written revelation of Himself to us. The Bible is without error because God cannot err or lie (Numbers 23:19). The Bible is consistent and does not contradict itself, but tells one great story, the story of redemption. God promises to work through the Bible to accomplish His purposes, including the salvation of the lost (Isaiah 55:10-11).
Unlike all other pieces of the armor of God, which are solely defensive, the sword is uniquely suited for both defensive and offensive roles. However, this weapon provided by the Spirit is not to be regarded as a book of magic charms or something to tie around our necks or to be kept under our pillows to ward off evil spirits. We are to take time with the word, to read, listen, study and, apply it personally and corporately.
The word of God gives direction, revealing good and bad (Psalm 119:105). God’s word is truth and it sanctifies us (John 17:17). Lack of knowledge can destroy, but we are blessed we if hear and keep the word of God (Luke 11:28). Knowing God’s word not only equips and edifies us but also prepares us to answer others who ask us (1 Peter 3:15). The all-powerful word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword, able to cut through every defense our enemy can raise against us (Hebrews 4:12). God’s word is full of promises and exhortations that provide comfort and strength in the battle.
As soldiers in God’s army, it is our responsibility and duty to use His Word to discern the truth and then follow it, to fight against the enemy and his evil ways. We fight knowing the end of the story. We fight in the confidence that if God is for us who can be against us? (Romans 8:31). We fight knowing God is true to His word as He told Isaiah: “Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it” (Isaiah 46:11).
When wielded by a servant of God, there is no enemy the Word of God, coupled with His Spirit, cannot defeat. And so, armed with our sword, we step out to fight our enemies head-on. The battle is real. It is immediate, and it is in front of us.
Take up your sword today and fight!
Lord, I thank you for your word and that you are indeed true to your word. Help me as I choose to fight confident that you are indeed for me, every step of the way, I pray.
