And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.Luke 22:19-20

Christ left us a fellowship ‘meal’ to remember Him by. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

Jerusalem was the epicentre of Judaism. People from all over had come together to remember the event that had birthed their nation. This year was extra special with the Galilean Teacher who had captured the hearts and minds of many. Could this be the year of political deliverance through Him, they wondered.

And it is in this setting that Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper during the Passover meal that He had with His disciples. He broke bread with them and drank wine from the cup with them, commanding them to do it in remembrance of Him until His coming again.

The bread and wine of the Holy Communion signify receiving of Christ’s body and blood, given for us. When we participate in the Holy Communion, we worship a triumphant victorious Saviour, we give thanks and renew our fellowship with Him. When we take the bread and wine, we are no spectators, we are deeply involved. We are all family of believers that come together to remember and anticipate His imminent return. We come to the Lord’s Table to receive grace and strength for living our Christian life until then.

What is your attitude as you participate in the Lord’s Supper?

Lord, help me ever be grateful and strengthened each time I come to your table, I pray.
