God called Ezekiel to his prophetic ministry during tough times. Though Judah still stood as an independent nation they were under Babylon’s powerful domination. And though the temple still stood and functioned in Jerusalem, the people had been carried away as captives. Ezekiel, the priest, was one among the captives. It is in this setting, that God calls Ezekiel to his prophetic work.
Ezekiel’s call began with a glorious vision of God. Ezekiel sees the heavens, God’s throne, and the cherubim. Ezekiel has an amazing vision of the likeness of the glory of God (1:28). The vision was so overwhelming that it caused Ezekiel to fall face down.
After the vision, God now calls him for the work He has for him. He asks him to stand up on his feet and receive his call. The Spirit entered Ezekiel and worked in him to do what God commanded. This same Spirit continues to help believers do what God commands.
The Holy Spirit still works and enters His people through the Word of God. And when God calls us to do a certain thing, then He gives us the power to do it. The best position we can have is to recognize our own needs and His all-sufficient grace and strength.
God continues to call and equip His people, even through tough situations of life. What is God calling you to do today?
