A New Song (Psalm 40:1-17) WAITING

Published on May 18, 2025

I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.  He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him.
Psalm 40:1-3

In the previous psalms, we see that David had been waiting for the Lord, but without an immediate answer. David continued to wait. He waited patiently, diligently, perseveringly, until God helped him.

As David waited, God inclined or turned to him. Inclining, pictures God bending down to David in his affliction, removing any perceived distance between the Lord and His servant. Almost like God’s attention was arrested and riveted, now David was confident of a favorable answer.

David’s patience for the Lord resulted in God lifting him up. He delivered him from his crisis. David’s prayer for deliverance was answered. God set him in a much better and more secure place. He helped him stand.

And that deliverance caused David to sing a new song. God gave him a fresh understanding of Himself and new experience of walking with Him. The Lord gave him a new song, a new reason to praise Him.

How good and right it is for the created to praise the Creator, the redeemed to praise the Redeemer, the delivered to praise the Deliverer. We are grateful that God gives us the ability to praise Him.

Are you willing to wait patiently in prayer?

Lord, give me a new song as I wait patiently for you, I pray.
