But for The Grace of God (Ephesians 2:1-10) GRACE

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast. – Ephesians 2:8-9

Paul begins this chapter with this powerful doctrine of the Christian faith. He tells the Ephesian church that they are dead in their transgressions. Transgression is an offense against the law. While sin is an immoral act, a transgression is against divine law. So basically, Paul is telling the Ephesian church, either way, you are dead, be it under the law or be it under God’s law. And yet he says, there is hope. You are saved. Saved from death and hell. Saved from punishment under the law. 

Saved because of God’s gift to mankind. God sent His Son to pay the price for our sins. We are saved not because we deserve it or have in any way earned it. Saved only because God, in His amazing incomprehensible love, chose to save us (John 3:16). If salvation was our accomplishment in any way, it would give cause to boast. But salvation is what God alone gave, and so He alone receives the glory. 

Paul says we are saved only by the grace of God. 

Grace is God’s unmerited favour to us.  And Paul is saying, we are saved because of God’s favour. Favour that we do not deserve by any reason or logic. 

We can do nothing to earn our salvation. We can only accept this gift of salvation that God extends to us, through His Son Jesus Christ. Have you accepted this gift yet?

Lord, help me never forget that, but for your grace, I would dead, eternally, I pray.
