Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. – Proverbs 19:27
Listening requires humility. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Solomon counsels his son to listen to his instruction. He also warns him that to stop listening is to go astray from the path of wisdom. To stay on the path of wisdom is a matter of choice. And yet, to stop listening is to ask for trouble.
To listen means to give heed to or pay attention. Listening is an other-focused activity. To listen one must, first, take the focus off, of yourself and shift it to the other who is speaking.
When you listen to another, what you are conveying is, you are important to me, what you are saying is important to me. When you listen, you are also showing a teachable spirit, acknowledging that you may not be the expert on the matter. When you listen, you display a humble attitude of one who is willing to listen and learn.
The Bible says, if you stop listening to instructions, you will stray from knowledge. Instruction for life often comes from parents, elders, mentors. But most importantly, instruction for our lives comes from the One who created us, in the owner’s manual, the Bible. Who better than our Creator to guide and instruct to live out our lives to the best potential? The Bible helps us grow in knowledge.
Would you say you are growing in knowledge?
Lord, help me humbly listen to your instruction and so grow in knowledge, I pray.
