Compassionate Restoration (Lamentations 3:1-26) REPENTANCE

The Book of Lamentations is a collection of five poems or songs mourning the conquest of Jerusalem and the Kingdom of Judah. The authorship of this book is traditionally ascribed to Jeremiah. The prophet and his fellow Jews lament the devastation of their beloved city at the hands of the Babylonians. The book of Lamentations reminds the readers that sin, in spite of all its allurement and excitement, carries with it the heavyweights of sorrow, grief, misery, barrenness, and pain. 

In chapters 1 and 2, Jeremiah wrote mainly as Jerusalem personified. Now in chapter 3, he moves to write as the voice of an individual sufferer, referring not just to himself but to many others who have seen affliction and knew that it came as God’s discipline. In v19-20, we find the prophet is not prescribing positive thinking for this deep affliction. Rather he felt it useful to remember, understand it for what it is, not to pretend it wasn’t there. And then in v22-23, he points to God. 

Jeremiah reminds the audience that the faithfulness of God is indeed great. The Lord is lovingly faithful to His covenant promises (Psalm 89:1). The great love and compassion of the Lord is new every morning, it is beyond measure. God’s covenant mercy or beneficial action on His people’s behalf, never ceases, even in the face of Judah’s unfaithfulness. This kind of mercy goes beyond the second mile, replacing judgment with restoration. God is willing to begin anew with those who repent. Each day presents another opportunity to experience God’s grace.
