As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the same clan as Saul’s family came out from there. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and he cursed as he came out. He pelted David and all the king’s officials with stones, though all the troops and the special guard were on David’s right and left. – 2 Samuel 16:5-6
Shimei’s words hurt!| WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Shimei falsely accused David that his situation and the loss of his kingdom was because of his past sins against the house of Saul. David did not defend himself or react in anger. He recognized the sovereignty of God, responded humbly, and received Shimei’s curse as from the Lord (v10-12).
Curse words are intended to inflict harm or damage, to belittle or to wish one evil. Being a child of God does not make you immune to others cursing. You can either respond in anger and ‘curse’ back or, like David, choose to recognize the sovereignty of God even in those painful situations.
Curses only have power over us if we believe them (Proverbs 26:2). As a child of God, you are blessed, regardless of what others say to you. Choose to reject words that do not line up with God’s Word and forgive those who curse.
Forgiving the other frees us to live victoriously in God’s blessing. Speak blessing over others. To cause growth, hope and healing.
Choose to become a bless-er!
Lord, help me believe what you say about me and be one who blesses others with my words, I pray.
