Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” – Isaiah 6:8
King Uzziah had died. Judah was in great national crisis. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Judah was facing God’s displeasure because of their neglect of God and His Word. In the first five chapters, Isaiah had proclaimed woe after woe on the people for their numerous sins. But then he has this awesome vision of God. God gave Isaiah this vision during a time of great loss and sorrow. What a reminder that He can and does bring beauty out of ashes and works all things for good, even the painful, sorrowful ones.
Isaiah saw the Lord high and exalted and seated on the throne, the train of His robe filled the temple. To view the holiness of God and His crystal-clear purity, brings to a sharp perspective on how short we, as humans, fall of this perfect and holy God. God is so holy, so set apart, so totally other than we are. This vision changes Isaiah’s entire response. From woes on the people the searchlight turns on to himself and he declared ‘woe to me!’ ‘I am a man of unclean lips!’
We do not know what was troubling Isaiah, but whatever it was, it prevented his lips from being God’s messenger to others. Unconfessed sin prevents us from worshipping Him with all our heart. God took the initiative to see His servant cleansed. Then the Lord calls Isaiah. And Isaiah’s most natural response was ‘here am I, send me.’
God continues to call His people to serve Him with clean hearts. What is your response to Him today?
Here am I, Lord, cleanse me and send me, I pray.
