He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” He replied. – Acts 9:4-5

The day that Stephen died great persecution broke out against the church. And Saul, a zealous Jew, who approved of Stephen’s murder (7:58) led in persecuting the church. Saul had heard that certain Christians had escaped to Damascus. So, he went to Damascus armed with letters from the Sanhedrin, to go and extradite them.
Saul wasn’t seeking Jesus, rather he decided against Jesus. But Jesus sought and decided for Saul. Damascus from Jerusalem was around 140 miles and a week’s journey by foot. And as Saul walked this road to Damascus, a bright light flashed from heaven and a voice called out to Saul.
Saul humbly responded with the question, who are you, Lord? And the Lord replied that He was Jesus. Paul spent the rest of his life wanting to know more completely the answer to this question, to know the Lord Jesus, more and more (Philippians 3:10). Saul’s conversion was decisive and complete. So, into Damascus he went, a changed man.
Paul, who had set out for Damascus like an avenging fury, was finally led in by the hand, blind and helpless. Up to this moment, Paul had been doing what he liked and thought best. From this time forward, he would be told what to do.
The Christian is one who, no more does what he wants, but begins to do what Christ wants. How about you?
Lord, may I increasingly do what you want, I pray.
