“But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless. – Matthew 22:11-12
Jesus told the story about a wedding banquet of a king’s son. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
He was picturing the Kingdom of Heaven and entry into it. God the Father is the King, the Lord Jesus is the Son. The banquet points forward to the ‘marriage supper of the Lamb.’ In the parable, none of those initially invited came. And so, the king sent his servants into the streets to invite everyone – of all classes and situations. Whoever will come, good and bad, Jew and Gentile, are invited and brought into God’s Kingdom.
The king invited everyone and accepted his guests in any condition. However, he did not expect them to remain unchanged. Guests were not to wear their own clothes. They were provided with wedding clothes. Apparently, one man thought his own clothing was good enough. And when the king in the story questioned the man, he was speechless.
We can enter God’s presence only through His Son, Jesus. People often want the relationship with God and to experience His promises, but believe they are good enough and don’t need to accept Jesus.
God requires holiness from those who come to His feast. And we are to be clothed in His garments of salvation and righteousness (Isaiah 61:10). Those who rely on their own good behaviour or religious practice are like one who is unclean and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).
Are you appropriately dressed for the greatest banquet ever?
Renew my thinking and my living, prepare me for your banquet Lord, I pray.
