Then He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. – Matthew 26:27-28

Today’s passage is the gateway to the ‘most holy place’ in Jesus’ life. As you read these verses you get a glimpse into the very core of the Lord’s heart. His deep love for His Father and His people.
Jesus is surrounded by people of varying attitudes. Despite three years with the Lord, Judas loved money, not the Lord. He resented Jesus for embracing the cross. This was not the kind of leader Judas wanted to follow. As the group’s treasurer, Judas was known to embezzle money regularly. One coin here, another coin there, led to him becoming increasingly hard of heart. Sin has a way of creeping in on us, slowly but steadily, if not dealt with immediately. Where are you in the danger of sin hardening your heart?
Peter boasted of how great his devotion to Jesus was. He refused to take Jesus’ warning. He sincerely believed he would die for Jesus and yet, Peter could not even stay awake to pray with Jesus. How often do we fail because we trust ourselves more than we trust God?
But Mary loved Jesus enough to listen to Him. She believed His words about the cross, though she did not fully understand. She wanted to give Him what cost her everything. Mary anointed Jesus with expensive perfume. Mary’s extravagant gesture reflected her extravagant love for Jesus.
What is your giving to Jesus costing you today?
Though I want to give you my all, I often fail like Peter, Lord. Please help me, I pray.
