Falsely Accused (Jeremiah 38:1-13) COMPROMISE

So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud. – Jeremiah 38:6

Jeremiah did not enjoy preaching his message of doom either. But God called Jeremiah to give His message to the people, which was their only chance of surviving the Babylonian threat. Jeremiah obeyed.

The officials asked King Zedekiah to execute Jeremiah, as his message was bad for the morale of those defending Jerusalem and that Jeremiah did not seek the good of the people. This was not the truth.

Zedekiah, lacking courage, allowed them to do to Jeremiah as they pleased. They lowered him into a cistern of mud. Like many other servants of God, Jeremiah was wrongly accused. Moses the humble man was accused of pride. Job the righteous man was accused of great sin. Jesus, the spotless son of God, was accused of being demon-possessed.

Jeremiah had a very difficult consistent message of judgement to deliver to his own people. He loved Judah, but he loved God much more. Jeremiah was obedient to what God told him to do and say. He prayed for God’s mercy on Judah but also trusted that God was good, just, and righteous.

Are you being obedient to the Lord, especially in the difficult things He has called you to do?

Lord, help me never compromise on doing your will, even when it is tough, I pray.
