From Depression to Delight (1 Chronicles 1:1-27) PRAYER

Published on Apr 24, 2025

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Saviour and my God. – Psalm 43:5

The psalmist is miserable. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

The psalmist is unjustly accused and surrounded by ungodly wicked people with deceitful tongues. He takes his sense of injustice to the Lord. He cries to the Lord for vindication and deliverance. The reason he turned to the Lord is because he had a relationship with Him. He says, for you are my God. Not just for you are God, but my God.

The psalmist is basically saying, Lord I am in a mess, I am miserable, and what I need is you. I need your light and truth to lead me. Not just to look at or admire. But to lead me.

The psalmist, who began with feeling miserable and depressed, moved on to praise God. And why? He allowed God’s Word, God’s light and truth to lead him. And so, he could close the psalm with this strong counsel to his own soul, telling his soul not to be downcast, but to put its hope in God. And that hope leads to praise.

All of us go through times of feeling miserable, especially when people are not fair to us. Often our natural response is to justify ourselves. But the psalmist sets us a worthy example. He turned to his God with whom he had a personal relationship. He asked for His guidance to face the situation. And finally finishes with praising God because he completely hoped in the Lord.

What do you need to move from your depression to delighting yourself in God?

Lord, help me grow in my love and trust in you, I pray.
