Abraham had been through an intense time of exercising faith, of hoping against all hope, to believe God for the almost ridiculous promise of a child when he was hundred and Sarah ninety. But he trusted God and God gave him the son that He had promised. But then soon, God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his promised son, the one he loved so, on Mount Moriah (Genesis 22:3).
Abraham simply could not understand. The Lord had promised to establish His covenant with Isaac (Genesis 17:19). Now, He Himself was asking Abraham to sacrifice the very same Isaac? But then his faith came into action.
Abraham was confident in God’s love for him and that he could trust God completely. And so, he set out the very next morning (v3) and told his servants that they will worship and they both will return (v5). Abraham believed that God would provide (v8). Abraham went up the mountain and did everything needed for the sacrifice. Interestingly God did not stop him until he actually raised the knife.
Tough situations test our faith. Loss of a loved one, a broken marriage, struggling finances and many more, are all real challenges we face. But as believers, we are called to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), like Abraham did. Faith also means obeying even when it hurts, even when it is hard…real hard.
God tests us to grow and mature us in our faith and trust in Him. To build us not to break.
Heavenly Father, help me put my faith into action, obeying you even when things are tough, I pray.
