But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. – 2 Chronicles 26:16
Uzziah’s reign was generally good. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Uzziah, also called Azariah (2 Kings 15), largely did good in the sight of the Lord. And he reigned 52 long years. He was active in opposing the enemies of Israel. Neighbouring countries brought him tribute. His fame spread among the nations because of his many achievements.
The main reason for Uzziah’s success was God’s help. He serves as a great example of someone who handled adversity better than success. Although his achievements eventually went to his head.
The law of God was clear that no king should also be a priest. And only a priest is to offer sacrifices in the temple. But Uzziah overstepped this law. He entered the temple of God to burn incense. He was not content with the authority God had given him. He wanted to add more priestly functions to his royal power.
Azariah the priest confronts him. Rather than repent, Uzziah became furious. ‘While he was raging at the priests before the incense altar in the Lord’s temple, leprosy broke out on his forehead’ (v19). He had to rush out of the temple, never to return. He remained and died a leper.
Interestingly, God’s righteous anger and punishment against Uzziah only broke out when he raged at the priests in his rebellious anger (v19).
With prosperity, there is always the danger of pride. What will you do to guard yourself?
Keep me humble, Lord, and help me finish well, I pray.
