Lord, are you not from everlasting? My God, my Holy One, you will never die. – Habakkuk 1:12

Habakkuk the prophet, had a burden. He had a message from God and it was heavy and saddened him. It was a heavy message of coming judgement on Judah.  Habakkuk deals with some tough questions that he brings to God and God answers.

The book of Habakkuk begins with his complaint. Habakkuk looks around and he sees the violence and injustice of the world around him. He is upset. He wails, and he complains. He can’t understand why God was allowing him to see all this. But in his complaining, he does not lose focus of who he was addressing.

Habakkuk says, Lord are you not from everlasting, you will never die? He moves from why to who. He remembers that God is infinite, unlike us finite human beings. He also affirms and reiterates his relationship, my God, my Holy One.

Two things stand out here. One, the fact that Habakkuk has a personal intimate relationship with God. He is not praying to some far away, distant God, but as he says, my God, my Holy One.  And yet, though he has a personal relationship with this God, Habakkuk also knows, recognizes and acknowledges that God is holy and way above in purity.

When faced with challenges, Habakkuk turned from his many ‘whys’ to the ‘who’ of the One he was trusting, because he knew Him as his personal and holy God.

Life is never easy. Challenges and discouragements are part of life. What’s your strategy?

Help me, Lord, to increasingly focus on who you are rather than my problems, I pray.
