My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. – Proverbs 7:1-3
Solomon emphasizes the need to keep and understand God’s Word and a father’s wisdom. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
The implication is not that reading the Bible will provide any magical protection. And yet a person who begins to know the Bible, treasure it and meditate on it, will soon enough begin to keep God’s commands. And keeping these commands will lead to life.
Solomon says, to his son, be intentional, work at storing up these commands. He is to guard these teachings as the apple of his eye. The apple of the eye refers to the pupil of the eye, which we go to great lengths to protect. So also, we are to honor and protect God’s Word by obeying it.
Solomon counsels his son to have a living breathing relationship with the Word of God. The Word was not just to be in his mind but to be engraved on his heart. It was to rule his heart and all his actions.
God’s Word is powerful and relevant for every aspect of life. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16)
How will you increase your time with reading, studying and applying God’s Word?
Lord, increase in me love for your Word, I pray.
