Jesus feeds the five thousand. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

This well-known story is recorded in all four gospels reiterating its importance as an example of Jesus’ miraculous power. Jesus feeds a multitude with the five loaves and two fish received from a little boy. No one knew where this bread actually came from, but He showed us that God can provide out of resources that we cannot see or perceive. Often it is easier to have faith when we think we know how God might provide. And yet, God’s ways are higher and His provision often comes in unexpected ways.

The number of five thousand men suggests that a total of perhaps fifteen to twenty thousand people, when women and children are included in the count. The Bible records that not only were the people fed, but there were leftovers, which were not to be wasted. “God’s generous giving and our wise using must go hand in hand.” (Barclay)

This miracle demonstrates that Jesus could feed the people of God, just as the Israelites were fed in the wilderness. It also displays the compassionate heart of Christ, even when He might have been exhausted Himself. This miracle is also a strong reminder that Jesus chose to work through the disciples, even though He could have very well managed otherwise.

The feeding of the five thousand reminds us to wisely use what we have been given, to trust God’s unlimited resources and not to waste what we have been given.

When faced with seemingly impossible situations are you willing to trust God to provide in unexpected ways?

Lord may I trust you even when I do not know how you would provide, I pray.
