How Much Will You Pay? (2 Chronicles 25:1-11) OBEDIENCE

Published on Jul 6, 2025

Amaziah asked the man of God, “But what about the hundred talents I paid for these Israelite troops?” The man of God replied, “The Lord can give you much more than that.” – 2 Chronicles 25:9

Amaziah assembled his army and numbered the troops. He also hired men from the northern tribes of Israel. This was a common practice in the ancient world.

But the Lord sent an anonymous prophet to warn the king. The king was not to use the Israelite troops for battle. If he did, the prophet warned him that God would make him fall before his enemy. Now, though it made perfect military sense for Amaziah to hire and use these troops, according to the word of God, it made no spiritual sense.

Amaziah heard and understood the message that the Lord sent him, but he had a relevant question. What about the money he had to pay them? The prophet wisely answered the Lord can give you much more.

So, Amaziah discharged the Israelite troops that had come. He paid them as promised and he trusted God to provide and to protect. Then Amaziah went and fought and defeated the Edomites, who apparently rebelled against Judah’s authority. He saw the victory that God promised.

Amaziah’s question was what will it cost me to be obedient to God? Obedience to God often comes with a price. Jesus said, whoever wants to be My disciple, must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow Me (Matthew 16:24). Whatever the cost of obedience, it is always ultimately cheaper than disobedience.

Are you willing to pay the price of being obedient to God?

Help me choose to obey you Lord, whatever the price, I pray.
