They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.1 Peter 3:11

Peter says we are to do good and turn from evil. We are also to seek and pursue peace.

Peace is tranquillity, harmony or security. It could also mean prosperity and well-being. Peace is directly related to the actions and attitudes of individuals. Peace takes flight for many reasons. Sinful habits rob us of our peace of mind. We cannot be at peace if we harbour discontentment, envy or bitterness.

Bitterness they say is like an acid, which damages the container that holds it. If there is someone who has wronged you, been unfair to you, you need to make the choice to forgive that person. It is only when you let go, that God can take up your cause, and He will.

Believers are called to allow the peace of God rule in their hearts (Colossians 3:15). We have peace when we trust and live by the promises of God. When we rely on ourselves, we reject the peace that God offers. Peace is a fruit of the Spirit. If we allow the Spirit to rule in our lives, we will experience the peace of God.

James 3:18 says, those who sow in peace, reap a harvest of righteousness. To live in peace, we need to accept and live by the reconciliation that Christ’s death offers. Be quick to seek forgiveness of both God and man, when you sin (1 John 1:9). Learn to be content (Philippians 4:11). Develop a grateful heart (Ephesians 5:20).

Lord, help me be one who lives in your peace, I pray.
