God is holy. In Isaiah 6, Isaiah’s response to God’s holiness was to recognize the sinfulness and the filthy state of his own heart and mouth. One way to describe God’s holiness is perfection. God is unlike any other (Hosea 11:9) and His holiness is the essence of that ‘otherness.’ There is absolutely no trace of sin in Him (James 1:13). No one can compare to Him (Psalm 40:5). His holiness fills His entire being and is reflected in every one of His characteristics.

Only when we glimpse the holiness of God will we recognize our own sinfulness. And only when we see our own sin for what it is before God, can there be true repentance. Realizing the dreadful consequence of sin and the fact that the sinless Son of God suffered our punishment, should bring us to our knees and join Job in saying ‘I am unworthy’ (Job 40:4).

Understanding God’s holiness should cause us to be awed by His compassion, mercy, grace, and forgiveness towards us. And then say with the Psalmist, ‘if you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?  But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you (Psalm 130:3-4).

Our reasonable response to this holy God is to offer our bodies as living sacrifices and live lives that are transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:1-2).

Lord, may I never lose awe of your holiness and my own sinfulness, I pray.
