So he got up, took the Child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. – Matthew 2:21
Joseph found himself in a very difficult position.| WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Joseph was a good man. But he simply did not understand what Mary, had just told him. How could it even be true? She couldn’t be lying, he knew she was honest. But then how could she be pregnant? Could what she said be really true?
All kinds of questions, doubts, and fears filled Joseph’s mind. And yet soon enough the angel of the Lord visits him in a dream. He comforts and assures Joseph that all that Mary had said was actually true. And that Mary was indeed with child only by the Holy Spirit.
Joseph accepted Mary.
They went together to their hometown, Bethlehem, to be numbered under the census. And Jesus was born there. However, after Jesus was born, when King Herod tried to have Him killed, Joseph fled with Mary and the Child, as instructed by the angel. He later returned.
It is interesting that after that initial vision to Mary, the rest of the communication by the angel is to Joseph. Even before he fully knew or understood, Joseph, a good man, wanted to protect Mary from public disgrace. And once he knew, Joseph played a key role. His willing, faithful obedience had a big impact.
What are you hesitant to obey God about because you don’t fully understand?
Lord, help me obey you completely, even when I don’t understand fully, I pray.
