Then Micaiah answered, “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the Lord said, ‘These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.’” – 1 Kings 22:17

King Ahab of Israel asks King Jehoshaphat of Judah to help him in this dispute against Syria. Jehoshaphat agrees but suggests that they enquire of the Lord. Now, that was a bold request to someone like King Ahab who set against the prophets of the Lord.
Ahab had prophets who would tell him just what he wanted to hear. They were not faithful prophets of the Lord, rather, they were keener to please their kings. And so these prophets prophecy victory for Ahab.
But Jehoshaphat insisted on hearing from a prophet of the Lord (v7). Ahab knew there was Micaiah, a prophet he did not like because he never prophesied good concerning him. But he obliges Jehoshaphat and has Micaiah brought in. Micaiah, unlike the others, was clear that his loyalty was to the Lord more than the king and that he would only speak what the Lord tells him (v14).
When he was asked, Micaiah states “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd” (v17). Zedekiah, Ahab’s leading prophet, struck Micaiah on the cheek and called him a liar. Ahab chose to believe Zedekiah’s predictions of victory and had Micaiah imprisoned. However, in the battle that followed, Ahab was killed, just as Micaiah predicted.
It took Micaiah courage and resolve to stand for the Lord, in the face of danger and threat from the evil king, but he did. Would you?
Give me, Lord, the courage to stand for you even in the face of danger, I pray.
