The book of prophet Amos is the only place that this man of God is mentioned in the Old Testament. He is not to be confused with Amoz, father of Isaiah (Isaiah 1:1). The name Amos means ‘burden’ or ‘burden bearer.’ Amos was a man with a burden about the judgments against Israel and the neighbouring nations.

Amos does not seem to have had any theological or prophetic training. He describes himself as neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but a shepherd who also took care of sycamore-fig trees (Amos 7:14-15). He was just a simple man uniquely called to ministry.

Amos’ mission was mainly directed to the neighbouring nation of Israel. His messages of impending doom and captivity because of her great sins, were largely unpopular and unheeded. The country was having good times, so his messages were not taken seriously.

Amos was not a prophet or a priest, he was ‘just-a’ shepherd, a small businessman in Judah. Why would anyone listen to him? But Amos obeyed God’s call instead of making excuses. He ended up becoming one of God’s powerful voice for change.

God has used and continues to use many ‘just-a’ such as salesmen, shepherds, carpenters, housewives, fishermen. God can use you, whatever you are or not.

The question is, are you willing to be used for the Lord?

Lord, make my heart ever willing and available to you, I pray.
