David had been doing well. God had been giving him victory on every side. But then, the devil rose in him in the form of pride. David wanted to gauge his military strength by taking a census. He wanted to know how many fighting men Israel had.

David’s dependence moved from God to his own ability and the strength of his army. Joab, commander of David’s army tried to dissuade him but David was insistent. So Joab took the census. This angered the Lord and He punished Israel.

The devil appears in the earliest accounts of the Bible (Genesis 3:1-7). He tricked Adam and Eve into disobeying God. He is always around and prompts people into the wrong action.

Satan rebelled against God (2 Peter 2:4, Luke 10:18) and fell from heaven. His sole purpose is to destroy or hinder the work of God (1 Peter 5:8-9). Satan’s attacks are sometimes subtle, disguising his motives. Other times his opposition is clear and direct, taking control of people (Mark 5:1-13). However, Satan’s time is limited. He will be finally destroyed at the end of time by God (Revelation 20:10).

Satan cannot possess those of us who are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. He sure can tempt us. But we are victors in Christ Jesus, for He that is in us is greater than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4). But we are to put on the full armor of God to stand against the evil schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11).

Have you put on your armor today?

Lord, help me know my enemy and daily put on my armour, I pray.
