Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” – John 20:28
Wow, what a heartfelt cry of surrender from a disciple full of doubts. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Thomas, one of the twelve disciples, had his own share of moods, doubts, and fears. Yet, he was also one of the most loyal of the disciples. Interestingly, he was the only disciple who was not there when the Lord appeared to His disciples for the first time (20:24), besides Judas, of course. And he, being true to his nature, refused to believe ‘hearsay’ and was very clear that, if he needed to believe, he needed to see, touch for himself (20:25). And the Lord did come back, just for him.
The Lord knew Thomas for exactly who he was and yet He loved him dearly and accepted him. The Lord didn’t love him any less, criticize him in any way or judge him. He went back for just one doubting Thomas like the shepherd who goes after the one lost sheep (Matthew 18:10-14). Thomas mattered.
And that love and acceptance led to a disciple brought to his knees in humble and complete surrender with the all famous cry, My Lord and my God!
Thomas had his own share of wrinkles and warts, but that did not hinder the Lord from loving him and using him. God can and does work with imperfect people. This same God loves and comes after each of us, weak and sinful as we are, and accepts each of us just as we are.
Is your heart’s cry too one of true surrender, my Lord and my God?
Give me, Lord, a heart that is truly and completely surrendered to you, I pray.
