More Than Physical Healing (John 5:1-15) HOLINESS

Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” – John 5:14

Jesus was back in Jerusalem. He went to the pool called Bethesda and saw this man lying on his mat. The pool of Bethesda was where many sick gathered for healing. Maybe the healing was real or maybe it was just a hopeful legend, that the first one in the pool when the waters were stirred, would be healed. There was hope that there was healing in this pool.

Jesus knew that the man had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years. And yet, He asked him if he wanted to be healed. Jesus knew that not every sick person wanted to be made well. Sometimes they were so discouraged that they had put away all hope of being healed. Also as Barclay comments, “An eastern beggar often loses a good living by being cured of his disease.”

The man’s answer, interestingly, was not the expected simple yes. Instead he gave a long explanation of why he could not get to the waters on time. Jesus tells him to “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” (v8) And he did.

Jesus later sought him out in the temple because he was more concerned about the man’s spiritual condition. Jesus told him to stop sinning. Jesus’ greater purpose of healing him physically, was to heal him spiritually.

Jesus continues to be concerned with the condition of our hearts and wants to heal our sin-sick souls. Jesus is asking you today, do you want to be healed?

Heal all of me, Lord, my body, mind and soul, I pray.

Amazing Faith (Luke 7:1-10) FAITH

Faith that moves the heart of God is not about worthiness — it’s about believing He can simply speak the word, and it will be done.
