Not Enough Tears (Jeremiah 9:1-12) GOD’S JUDGEMENT

Published on Aug 9, 2025

Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for the slain of my people. – Jeremiah 9:1

In the previous chapter, Jeremiah lamented over Judah, as he prophetically saw them conquered, exiled and many killed. And here he is saying that he does not have enough tears to lament over the coming destruction of Judah.

Jeremiah looked ahead and saw that payday was coming. Just as there is a bill at the end of a meal or stay at a hotel, so also there is a time of accounting. There is a day of reckoning when God will call His people to account. Jeremiah saw the connection between the way the people were living and the ultimate judgment of God. He also saw what the people did not. He made connections that the people didn’t make. And he was grieved. He wept.

God’s coming judgment is a repeated theme in the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a clear minority with his message.  The people were not interested. God’s judgment is never a popular message. It is not a message that people want or like to hear. Not then, not now. And yet, you and I are called to tell.

We are a minority today too. But we are called to proclaim God’s love and impending judgment to people. People need to hear the truth about Christ, His death and life-giving resurrection. They also need to know that there will be a day of reckoning.

Does your heart break over people who don’t know about Christ?

Lord, help me be bold and willing to share about you, I pray.
