Not in My Hands, But Yours (1 Samuel 24:1-22)  SUBMISSION

Published on Apr 14, 2025

The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 1 Samuel 24:4

That could very well have been the question that tormented David, as he, for years, ran for his life, from King Saul. Yes, this very David who had saved him and the entire Israelite nation, from the giant Philistine tormentor, Goliath. This very David who was his son Jonathan’s best friend. This very David who had bravely brought the bride price of two hundred Philistine foreskins, to marry his daughter, Michal. And yes, this very David who had never once done him any wrong. And yet, Saul was bent on killing David.

As they hid in a cave, from Saul, he came to the very same cave, to relieve himself. And the men with David saw this as a ‘God-sent’ opportunity to put an end to the years of torment. But David refused. His men could not understand why David would give up such a ‘golden opportunity’.

But David knew that it was not his place to harm Saul, whatever the reason. Saul was the king, anointed by the Lord, placed in authority over him. And so, he dared not raise his hand against him. Romans 13:3 says if we rebel against authority, we rebel against God.  Hebrews 13:17 calls us to submit to our leaders.

Would you like David, choose to respect those in authority over you and trust God to do the rest?

Lord, help me trust you enough to submit to those you have placed over me, even when they are difficult, I pray.
