For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline. – 2 Timothy 1:7
Paul is writing his second letter to his son in the faith, Timothy. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
He begins his letter with thanksgiving for Timothy, for his sincere faith and rich legacy. And then one of the first things Paul wants to remind Timothy is the gift that he has. Paul reminds Timothy that he does have a gift. And that gift is to be used, he is to fan the flame of that gift.
And then Paul says, for God has not given us a spirit of timidity or fear. Now he says that obviously because he senses fear in Timothy.
Fear cripples.
Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain or harm. Misplaced fear is not from God but the devil. Fear torments and damages us. Fear robs us of our peace and joy. Fear keeps us from being the best we can be, from rising to our full potential.
But when God calls us, He also equips us. Each of us is gifted with one or the other. And the Word of God says we are to use those gifts, by the power, love, and self-discipline that God gives us. Power to overcome our fears. Power to do all that He has called us to do and do it well. He gives us the power to do it with His confidence, for the Word says, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13). God also gives us the love to drive our actions and the discipline to accomplish it.
What is fear crippling and keeping you from doing what God has called you to do?
Lord, help me serve you, by your power, I pray.
