In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses proclaimed to the Israelites all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them. – Deuteronomy 1:3
Deuteronomy is Moses’ final and personal challenge to the people he loved. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
At the end of Numbers, the people of Israel stood on the banks of the Jordan, ready at last to enter the Promised Land. Moses knew he would soon die. God appointed Joshua to lead the people in the conquest of the land of Canaan. In the first thirty-three chapters of this book, Moses is passionately instructing, challenging and warning the sin-prone people that he had led for forty years.
In Deuteronomy, Moses restated God’s law. Although this book contains much law, it is not just a law code. It is a passionate teaching and application of the law. Moses longed for the people to do what was right and good in the Lord’s sight.
The recurring theme of this book is – remember. Moses entreats his people to remember God has led them, to remember that they were a chosen people, a people for whom God had a purpose. And most importantly, to remember to love and obey God and not follow other gods.
A Christian too is called to remember. Remember Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross that gives life eternal. To remember how the Lord has led, provided and answered many a prayer. To remember that all that you have is a gift from the Lord. Remembering keeps us humble and provides much-needed perspective in life.
Would you pause right now to prayerfully remember and thank God for His goodness to you and your loved ones in the past one week?
Lord, help me be ever mindful of you in my life, I pray.
