The Lord said to Aaron, “You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood. – Numbers 18:1
God appointed Aaron and his sons to be priests. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
As God’s chosen priests, Aaron, and his sons were responsible for the purity of the sanctuary and the priesthood. The priests continually offered sacrifices on behalf of the people. Day after day every priest stood and performed his religious duties. Again, and again, he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins (Hebrews 10:11). Their work was never done. They never got to sit down.
Aaron’s role as priest, though extremely important, anticipated the greater and final priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ, which was yet to come. The offerings of the Hebrew priests pointed to the way of salvation. But when Jesus Christ the High Priest had offered for all time, one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God and since that time He waits for his enemies to be made His footstool (Hebrews 10:11-14). Jesus the High Priest sat down.
God created us. But our sin separated us from Him. Now, God did not need to make a way for sin to be atoned for. He could have simply condemned us all. Instead, He loved us so much, that He opened a way for all to come to Him. He gave us His Son as the one-time atonement for our sin. (John 3:16-18). We need to come to Him, on His terms.
Have you believed in Jesus as your Saviour?
Lord Jesus, I accept you and your finished work on the cross for my sin.
