The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died.

Aaron oversaw the Israelites while Moses was away. As time went by, the people grew restless and began to grumble. Grumbling is often a precursor to sin. And sin they did, very gravely.
The Almighty God, who had led and provided so miraculously, was easily forgotten and Moses taken for dead. The people convinced Aaron into creating a golden image for them to worship. Moses came down to the sound of revelry gone wrong and was furious.
In his anger, Moses threw the tablets to the ground. He grinds the broken pieces to powder and makes the people drink it. Moses next calls the people from the entrance of the camp. He asks them to choose. Whoever was for the Lord was to come to him. Only the Levites come. Moses then called the Levites to do something tough. He told them to go through the camp, from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor. And the Bible says, three thousand men fell that day. What a heavy price to pay.
Commitment to Jesus Christ comes with a price too. Jesus said if anyone comes to me and does not hate his own, even his own life cannot be His disciple (Luke 14:26). You and I are called to choose Christ in the small and big happenings of life, among family, friends and in the marketplace. And that could sometimes come with a heavy price.
Are you willing to choose to follow Christ daily, anyway?
Lord, may I choose you every day, even when it hurts, I pray.
