Selfish Pride (Obadiah 1:1-21) PRIDE

Published on Jul 1, 2025

You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble. – Obadiah 1:12

The book of Obadiah is just a single chapter making it the smallest book in the Old Testament. Obadiah means “worshipper of Yahweh” or “servant of Yahweh.” Obadiah’s prophecy is different from the others. His focus was more on the sin of Edom rather than on Judah or Israel.

The Edomites were the descendants of Esau, Jacob’s brother. Edom was known for their pride and how they did not help the Israelites in their time of need. And so, Obadiah’s focus is on the destructive power of selfishness and pride. He warns against being proud and gloating over another’s fall. Obadiah also reminds us not to be so focused on our own feelings and desires that we don’t consider the impact on those around.

Instead, Obadiah calls us to come under God’s authority. To allow our appetites and desires to be controlled by Him used for His divine purposes. Unlike Edom, we are to help people. If we stay true to Him, God will overcome on our behalf. We have nothing to be proud of except Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross for us.

If we think hard enough, all of us will surely be able to identify at least such a person in our lives, who by their selfish pursuits have caused us pain. But the bigger question is, do we also come under this section of people?

Lord, help me trust you enough to be selfless and humble with those around me, I pray.
