The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. – Nahum 1:2

Nahum is a short yet powerful message for the people of Nineveh.| WATCH ON YOUTUBE

Nahum is one of the small books of the Old Testament that we may not have turned to recently. And yet the message of Nahum is one of great relevance to the people of Nineveh and remains relevant to us today.

Nineveh was the ancient Assyrian capital city. And this city had heard the preaching of Jonah just a hundred years back and had repented. But here was Nahum now called to preach to this city again. The people of Nineveh had fallen back into sin and were ripe for God’s judgment again. This is often true in each of our lives too. We hear God’s Word, we recognize our sin, we repent and yet soon enough we go back to our old ways.

Today’s text reminds us that the Lord is a jealous God. Have you ever wondered how can that be? How can it be said that God is jealous? God is not jealous of us; He is jealous for us. God’s jealousy is love in action. He refuses to share the human heart with any rival. Not because He is selfish but because upon that loyalty to Him depends our very moral life.

The truth is also that we cannot fight against God and hope to prevail. Everyone who sets themselves against God will end up receiving His vengeance. And that is sure not a nice place to be. Knowing God’s power should make us trust and fear His judgment.

In what way are you trying to fight God today?

Lord, help me accept and enjoy your jealous, protective love for me, I pray.
