In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. He prayed to the Lord, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign. – 2 Chronicles 32:24

Immediately after independence from King Sennacherib of Assyria, Hezekiah fell ill to the point of death. The Lord sent Isaiah to tell him to put his house in order because he would not recover from this illness. Hezekiah was unhappy and begged the Lord, and the Lord granted him another fifteen years.
Hezekiah soon recovered. But sadly, this healing made Hezekiah proud and selfish. A delegation came from Babylon, with well wishes for his healing, and to figure out how Hezekiah’s God had defeated the Assyrians. Hezekiah had an excellent opportunity to testify to God’s faithfulness and answered prayer. Instead, in his pride, he chose to show off his wealth and military strength. What a sad choice.
This choice, Isaiah prophesied would lead to the invasion of Judah by Babylon some years later (2 Kings 20:16-18). It was also during the years of his recovery that Hezekiah fathered Manasseh, one of the most-wicked kings that Judah ever had. Answered prayer led Hezekiah to pride and selfishness.
We don’t always know what is best for us. When we believe we know better than God, it leads to pride. It takes humility to submit to God. Our supreme example is found in Christ Himself, who submitted to the Father, even unto death on the cross. He prayed all His desires and fears to the Father. But He finished His prayer with a small yet powerful word, YET. He prayed, yet not my will but yours be done.
Are yours, ‘yet’ prayers that submit to God?
Help me trust and submit to you Lord, I pray.
