Not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it. Numbers 14:23
Moses intercedes. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
In the previous chapter, having reached the brink of the promised land, Moses sends out leaders from each tribe, including Joshua and Caleb, to explore the land. They confirm that the land is indeed flowing with milk and honey, but the people of the land were too powerful for them. Joshua and Caleb disagree, insisting that with God’s help they could surely conquer the land. The people go with the report of the other spies and begin to grumble against Moses and Aaron and talk of stoning them.
The Lord angered by their contempt and unbelief, wants to strike down the entire nation. Moses falls on his face before the Lord and pleads for forgiveness. The Lord relents. He agrees to forgive them, not to destroy the nation by the plague, but there was to be a consequence. The Lord says not one of these people would enter the land He had promised, except for Joshua and Caleb, who believed.
The Lord had spectacularly led His people out from their centuries of slavery, parted the waters of the Red Sea when the Egyptian armies were in hot pursuit. He had provided for their every other need and led them with His presence each day. And yet, they seem to have forgotten causing them to grumble.
To grumble is to rebel against God.
Take a moment to look back over your life to remember the wonderful ways the Lord has led and provided for you over the years lest you rebel. A heart of gratitude is a great antidote against grumbling
Give me a heart of gratitude Lord, I pray.
