This psalm written by a man who went  through great trouble in his life has come through it with a deep and passionate understanding of God’s unfailing love (v75-77). The author through his pain and suffering has learned to cling to the truths that he learned from the scriptures.

This psalm affirms the character of God. In almost every verse, the word of God is mentioned. This psalm magnifies the law of God and points to its excellence and relevance. And the psalmist speaks from his own experience of the benefits of the law. There are different terms that refer to the word of God throughout this psalm – law, testimonies, precepts, statutes, commandments, judgments, word and ordinances.

The Word of God reflects God’s nature and we learn that we can trust Him. God’s Word is enough to make us wise, to train us in righteousness and equip us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:15-17). The Word of God is a wonderful reflection of the amazing character of God. We also learn about God’s plans and purposes for humankind. And that we are blessed if we delight ourselves in this law and meditate on it day and night (Psalm 1:2).

This psalm reminds us that if we hide God’s Word in our hearts, it will keep us from sinning (v11).

What are you hiding in your heart?

Lord, increase my love for your Word, I pray.
