All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. – Acts 2:4

The disciples returned to Jerusalem and regularly met together for prayer. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all gathered in one place. And the Bible says, suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them (v2-3).

In the Old Testament, ‘Pentecost’ referred to the Jewish ‘Harvest Festival’, which took place fifty days after the start of Passover. But for New Testament believers, ‘Pentecost’ is the day associated with the giving of the Holy Spirit in full to everyone who repents and turns in faith to Christ Jesus.

The Holy Spirit, the third person in the Trinity, is the Advocate or Counsellor that the Lord Jesus promised His disciples that He would ask the Father to send (John 14:16). The Holy Spirit is also known as the Spirit of Truth. Malachi refers to the coming messenger of God as the refining fire (Malachi 3:2-3). The Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove, on Jesus, at His baptism, which pictures the gentleness of the Holy Spirit.

The character and activities of the Holy Spirit are emphasized through the various names and descriptions by which the Spirit is known. We must be careful, however not to make these images anything more than helpful pictures.

Which of the names of the Holy Spirit warms you most? Why?

Thank you, Lord, for the gift of the Holy Spirit that guides and counsels me.
