He said: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge, and my Saviour— from violent people you save me. “I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies. 2 Samuel 22:2-4
David needed more than one title to describe his God.| WATCH ON YOUTUBE
David piled title upon title in praising God. And every single title is prefixed with the personal pronoun ‘my.’ The God David was talking about was not a distant God, He was not someone else’s God, nor someone who David had seen in other people’s lives. Each title came from his very own personal experience of how he had experienced God in the different circumstances and seasons of his life. Each title was meaningful to David because God fulfilled the meaning of each title in David’s experience.
David had experienced the Lord’s deliverance. He had tasted and known that God could be counted on, that He was firm as a rock. David had experienced God’s protection multiple times when he ran to Him for refuge. And so, David’s praise rose from his very personal experience.
When we experience God personally, it brings great strength and beauty to our faith. The power of ‘my’ comes when we see God for who He is. When we personally know and experience Him as our rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, stronghold and Saviour, it is natural to trust Him completely.
How have you experienced God? What titles would you use to praise God?
Lord, I want to experience you in new and powerful ways, I pray.
