For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel. – Ezra 7:10

Ezra the prophet, had an effective ministry which included teaching the Word of God, initiating reforms and restoring the worship of God. He believed in the need and use of God’s Word as the only authoritative rule for living. Ezra was also instrumental in leading spiritual revival in Jerusalem.

When Ezra returned from captivity in Babylon, he expected to find the people serving the Lord, joyfully. Instead, he found the opposite. He was frustrated and sad. But he did not lose trust in God. He wanted the people to know how important and essential the Word of God was. He taught the people the Law.

As a teacher of the Law, Ezra devoted himself to three things – to the study of the Law of God, to the observance of this Law that he studied and then, only then, to the teaching of this Law in Israel.  Ezra did not just flip through the Book of Law whenever he found the time. He did not just read through the Law but studied it. He studied it, observed and then acted on it.

The Bible records that Ezra devoted himself to the study of the law. To devote is to give all or most of one’s time or resources to a person or activity. For Ezra studying the Law of the Lord was not a casual, once a week activity. He gave most of his time and resources to the study of the Law.

What are you devoted to?

Heavenly Father, increase in me the desire to study and obey your Word, I pray.
