But Zerubbabel, Joshua and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, “You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the Lord, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us.” – Ezra 4:3
An offer of a dangerous alliance. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
Judea had not been completely emptied of the local people. There was a remnant that remained. And when they saw the Israelites begin to rebuild the temple, they were not happy. They were enemies of Judah and Benjamin. But they suddenly pretend to be very friendly and want to help. They wanted to partner in the work either to ruin it or to influence it to their benefit.
But Zerubbabel, Joshua and the rest of the leaders, were unified in their response. They firmly and sternly decline any help from these people. They did this knowing that they had the permission of Cyrus, king of Persia to rebuild the temple. But they also knew they lacked human and financial resources. And yet, they knew that allowing these enemies would be dangerous for them and their work.
It takes courage and great faith to refuse partnerships that may seem helpful but are from the wrong kind of people. Especially in times of crisis, men of faith have fallen into the blunder of associating themselves with those who do not share their faith. And that has often led to experiences of great opposition to their work.
Would you seek God’s wisdom and counsel to make the right decisions regarding your partnerships and associations?
Lord, fill me with your wisdom I pray, in the decisions and choices I make.
