Help me, Lord my God; save me according to your unfailing love. Let them know that it is your hand, that you, Lord, have done it. – Psalm 109:26-27
David is in trouble again.| WATCH ON YOUTUBE
David is surrounded by many enemies. The wicked have been speaking against him. And so, he prays that God would not be silent. He did not want the mouth of the deceitful to have the last word.
David was humble and honest about his need. He was poor, needy and hurting deeply (v22). He was tired and worn. And his cry was simple and straightforward. Help me, Lord my God! His plea was much like the Canaanite woman with the demon-possessed daughter (Matthew 15:21-25).
David’s prayer was based on God’s unfailing love. He had nothing to claim for himself. He pleads because of God’s mercy, not his own merit. He calls on God’s character and goodness to save him.
David wanted deliverance not just for himself but also for the glory of God. David wanted his enemies and all who look at him to know that his rescue was from God’s hand, that it was the Lord who had done it.
“Ungodly men will not see God’s hand in anything, if they can help it, and when they see good men delivered into their power, they become more confirmed than ever in their atheism; but all in good time God will arise and so effectually punish their malice and rescue the object of their spite that they will be compelled to say like the Egyptian magicians, ‘this is the finger of God.’” (Spurgeon).
What’s your attitude when you come to God in your need?
Lord, may ‘Your finger’ ever be evident in my life, I pray.
