Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old, he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6

Children need training. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE

The job of a  parent is not to simply let them grow up anyway, but to train them, in the way he or she should go. The child needs to be guided and directed in the way he or she must go.

Parents are stewards of the children God entrusts in their care. And so, the way the child should go refers to training your child in God’s ways. To help the child grow in the path of wisdom and life as against the way of folly and destruction (v5). Parents are to teach and discipline their children in the ways of the Lord and for the Lord.

The way he should go also refers to the child’s individual way or inclination. Parenting involves discerning and working on the strengths and weaknesses of each child, recognizing that no two children are the same. According to the child’s way is to respect each child’s individuality and build them. And yet that does not mean to give in to their self-will.

And a child so trained, will not depart from it. This is a wonderful promise, especially to parents troubled over their adult children. A child that is trained in the proper way, though they depart for a season, will return and not depart from it.

The pressures on children today are so high. And the pressures on parents even higher. And in a world like this, to teach the children the ways of the Lord and to model them in one’s own life, is often the greatest challenge parents face.

Lord, help me rely on you for wisdom as I train up my children in the way they should go, I pray.
