Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so, hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. – Ezekiel 33:7
You wicked person, you will surely die. | WATCH ON YOUTUBE
This was the general message Ezekiel was to give the people of Israel. God appointed Ezekiel as a watchman for the people of Israel to warn them of the coming danger. Ezekiel heard from God that judgment was coming soon, and he was to announce it.
Now, if Ezekiel faithfully delivered the message to the people, then the response of the one he warned was the responsibility of one who heard it. But if Ezekiel did not tell the people, giving them the opportunity to repent and turn from their evil ways, then Ezekiel would be held responsible for their blood (v2-6).
The Lord reiterates a basic principle about His nature and dealings with humanity. God takes no special pleasure in the death of the wicked (v11). God’s heart is for people to repent, to turn from their way and live. God is not sadistic and cruel, making repentance impossible because He loves to see humanity suffer. But He will not spare the requirements of justice and holiness for those who refuse to turn to Him.
The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 reminds us that every disciple of the Lord Jesus is to share the gospel to the ends of the earth. We are watchmen who are responsible to tell people the gospel and warn them of the coming judgment of God. We are to tell and live a life that points to Christ. Changing hearts is the Holy Spirit’s work.
Are you being a watchman for the Lord?
Lord, may my life and words always point to the truth of your Word, I pray.
