Worship Through Tears (Job 1:1-22)                 PERSPECTIVE

Published on Jan 4, 2025

At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” Job 1:20-21

Job was crushed!

Job had just received devastating news! In a matter of less than twenty-four hours, Job lost not just all his cattle, all his crops, all his wealth, but all his ten children as well! The magnitude of his loss is almost unimaginable. If these losses were distributed among even a dozen people, still the loss would be extremely painful to each. And here, one-man Job loses all he has which matters to him in a single day!

Job’s pain was unbearable. But the way this godly man handles his painful reality is a powerful lesson for all of us. The Bible says, in his unspeakable sorrow, Job’s response was to worship God. He expressed his pain honestly, he mourned. But he did not shake his fist in God’s face. He was not angry or bitter. Instead, he fell face down in surrendered worship.

Job recognized and acknowledged God’s ownership and his own stewardship. He recognized that God has the unquestionable right to take back that which is His, whenever He chooses, no questions asked. Many of us wrongly assume that all that we have is the result of our own hard work, talent, and abilities. But the truth is that, all that we have is His, we are only stewards or caretakers (Deuteronomy 8:18).

Are you able to trust the loving sovereignty of God through tough times?

Lord help me never forget that all that I have is yours, I pray.
