When Tears Overtake Words (Romans 8:18-30) DEPRESSION

Published on Dec 9, 2025

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.  And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. – Romans 8:26-27

Jesus when talking to His disciples about His impending death on the cross, comforted them with the fact that He would not leave them as orphans, but send them a Counsellor, a Friend, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter (John 14:16-18). The Holy Spirit is the seal of every believer, the One who walks with us through this life’s journey.

The Holy Spirit is the gift available to believers only. The Spirit of God, understands us, like nobody else ever can, is also the one who knows and understands the heart and will of God. In this passage, Paul says the Spirit understands us, intercedes for us through wordless groans. The Spirit alone knows our deepest pain and our darkest fears. He knows our doubts and our confusions. The Holy Spirit knows and understands us better than our best friend ever can. He also knows the heart of God and is able to intercede for us according to God’s will for us.

So, when you are so numb with pain and not even able to pray and tears overtake your words, take comfort. The Holy Spirit, your Comforter understands you and  groans and intercedes  on your behalf, according to the will of God.

Thank you, Lord, for the marvelous gift of the Comforter, the Holy Spirit.
