Our Father in Heaven – Matthew 6:9

The prayer that our Lord Jesus taught His disciples in these verses of Matthew 6:5-13 is famously known as the Lord’s Prayer.

This is one prayer that is so well known that not just Christians, but even people of other faiths, know it by heart, but  many a times it is repeated meaninglessly, more as a rote or even as a magic charm.

This prayer begins very simply, yet emphatically, with a phrase so simple, yet so pregnant with meaning. Our Father in heaven! The whole pivot of this prayer is contained in this phrase.

Our Father, which reminds us that we are praying to someone with whom we have a close relationship. Without the relationship, this prayer is invalid. Only those who can truly address God as Father, with a personal relationship that allows Him to even be addressed as Daddy my Daddy, can pray this prayer meaningfully.

Interestingly, though the relationship is my Daddy, the prayer is our Father or our Daddy.  This prayer reminds us of our responsibility to pray for others and with others.

Now, prayer is always addressed to someone who is believed to be able to answer. When we pray, we acknowledge that we are relying on God and His ability and willingness to answer.

The phrase ‘in heaven’ reminds us to direct our prayers to God who is in heaven, the God who is above and beyond the man who is praying to Him. ‘In heaven’, points to the fact that He is in control of, not just the earth, but that He is sovereign over all of the universe.

How is your relationship with this God?

Father, help me willingly bring every area of my life under your Lordship, I pray.
