Building on the Rock: Jesus Our Firm Foundation

Read the Bible in One Year: OT Judges 13-15, NT Luke 6:27-49

Luke 6:46-48 – “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.

Jesus is our Rock and firm foundation.

Jesus challenges His followers to not only call Him “Lord” but also to align their lives with His teachings. He emphasizes that true discipleship involves more than mere acknowledgment. Those who do obey Him would display a clear sequence – they come to Him, hear His words and then puts them into practice.

By using the analogy of building a house on a solid foundation, Jesus illustrates the importance of building our lives upon Him, our unshakable Rock on which we can securely establish our lives. When we anchor ourselves in His truth, grace, and love, we can withstand the floods of adversity and remain unshaken. Jesus is the Rock of our salvation and in Him we find security, peace, and strength. In the face of trials and tribulations, His presence sustains us. Like the wise builder in Jesus’ parable, we can stand firm, unshaken by the storms of life that threaten to overwhelm us.

Throughout the Bible, God is often referred to as our Rock—a symbol of strength, stability, and refuge. The psalmist reminds us that God is our unwavering foundation, our place of safety and salvation amidst the storms of life (Psalm 18:2). Paul in 1 Corinthians 3:11 affirms that there is no other foundation to build upon other than Jesus Christ Himself.

Storms of life are a given, not one of us is an exception. When the storms of life hit, are we tossed by the winds of doubt and unbelief or actively seeking to put His words into practice, allowing His love and grace to shape our character and guide our decisions?

Time and storms of life will prove the strength of our foundation. Through each stormy gale, we have a choice to make. We can either be people who live by the standards and shaky wisdom of the world or as followers of Jesus, we can build on the solid foundation of Christ, intentionally aligning our thoughts, actions, and attitudes with His teachings.

May we today choose to establish our lives on the Rock that is Higher than I, in Christ Alone, trusting Him and His Word.

Ponder

  1. Do I truly seek to come to Jesus, hear His words, and put them into practice?
  2. What areas of my life am I struggling to surrender and fully submit to Christ’s lordship?
  3. When the storms of life come, is my response characterized by obedience to Jesus, or do I crumble under pressure, struggling with inconsistency and selective obedience?
